Ramadhan
This is my personal Ramadhan experience as a Muslim living in Japan.
Before it's too far, I would like to give a short explanation about Ramadhan.
Ramadhan is the 9th month of Islamic Calendar, known as the month of Fasting, lasts for 29-30 days based on the sighting of the Crescent moon.
Fasting is obligatory for adult Muslims and included in the five pillars of Islam.
The Muslims refrain from eating foods, drinking, and smoking as well as engaging in Sexual activities with one's spouse from before dawn (Suhoor) until after sunset (Ifthar). This year Ramadhan lasted from June 18th to July 18th, and Ramdhan in Japan was almost 17 hours long. When I was in my country, Ramdhan lasted 13,5 hours. Of course it was a big challenge for me personally, since Ramdhan usually is shorter hours. So, here are my personal Ramadhan experiences in Japan.
I live in Sendai, one of the best cities to live in Japan, Ramadhan this year in Sendai was very fun, because Alhamdullilah, Sendai relatively had cooler temperature during Ramadhan and there are many many many Muslims communities in Sendai that provided foods and drinks for ifthar. And did you know that ICCS (Islamic Cultural Center of Sendai) provided foods for fasting people EVERYDAY for about 29 days during Ifthar and Suhoor time (May ALLAH blessed all the people who provided the foods Ameen). However, there were some issues that I would like to tell you, and maybe most of Muslims in Sendai or even Japan have experienced this kind of situation.
1. "Are You Ok?" questions and "This, have a drink, no one knows" offers:
Summer in Japan just started, though it’s a little bit tough to be honest, I am happy because Ramadhan is the month of worth waiting. But many Japanese are not yet familiar with this kind of ritual, so they always ask me whether if I am ok or not. They are too worried that at some point of time I might faint.
Every year, every time I should convince them that I AM OK and I AM SO HAPPY inside as the matter of fact. One day one of my friends brought me a bottle of water and secretly put it in my hand and said, "Here, have a drink, no one knows" I laughed that time and told her that no one knows but GOD knows. She is a very nice lady and so happy that she paid attention to me.
2. The ice cream and other cold drinks temptations:
In my country, of course not so many people openly eat or drink in front of people who fast. However in Japan, I should prepare myself for the hot summer days in which people just drink cold beverages and eat ice creams right in front of my face, but this is not anyone's fault. I understand that I live in Japan and Ramadhan thing is unfamiliar for Japanese. So I still have to respect Japanese culture.
Through this Ramadhan, I felt the brotherhood and sisterhood of the Miyagi Muslims community. I was so happy to gather every week to try new foods.
Alhamdullilah, Ramadhan is always be my favorite month. Goodbye Ramadhan, see you again next year. Ameen
Actually there are many more that I really want to tell you about, but I have a seminar today, so see you again later...
Here are some of pictures I took from ICCS food menu for IFTHAR...

Coop (Japan’s famous supermarket)
Assalamualaykum,
Too tired to cook? Don’t worry! If you live near Coop (Japan’s famous supermarket), you will find many Halal (InsyaALLAH) takeout foods with Muslim friendly ingredients. My favorite takeout food from this store is Sushi; their sushi do not contain any Mirin/Gelatin in the rice. Unfortunately, the soy sauce inside the Sushi package contains alcohol, so it’s better to use another soy sauce (Don't use packaged one).
Another takeout food that you may find it Halal is: Maki. Maki is a type of sushi roll that rice and various fillings (basically fish and vegetables) are wrapped in a sheet of dried seaweed. You can also try their fresh Salmon Marinade, which raw salmon slices are marinated in lemon juice with sliced onion. It tastes refreshing and energizing!

Another
food that, insyaALLAH, you can try is their “Maguro no Tataki” and “Udon
set,” Although emulsifiers is listed as one of ingredients, we
confirmed with Coop directly that they use emulsifiers derived from
plants (it’s safe to consume for Muslim, InsyaALLAH).
Coop’s variety of fresh salads are Halal as well, insyaALLAH, as long as no meat is added.
Another thing that I like about Coop’s Sushi is, it will be way more cheaper when you buy it between 9 to 10 PM; the price goes down around 50%
It’s the Student strategy! lol.

Halal Gyudon (Beef Bowl)
Assalamulaykum,
Have you ever tried Halal Gyudon (Beef Bowl) in the restaurant?
Unfortunately, in the place where I live there is no Halal Gyudon shop.
Gyudon is usually cooked with Sake (or Japanese rice wine) and Mirin (which contain alcohol) and uses non-halal beef. But I have to find a way to try this famous Japanese traditional food. And the only possible way is to cook Halal Gyudon by myself. I found the recipe on the internet (Youtube Channel; Cooking With Dog:https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCpprBWvibvmOlI8yJOEAAjA), and I modified a little bit because Muslims cannot use any alcohol for cooking.

typical Japanese Festival foods
Great summer festivals are ahead of us, which means that to find
Halal foods at the spot is very important. Here are some typical
Japanese Festival foods that's, insyaALLAH, Halal.
1. Churros
“Churros” is fried pastry dough made from flour. This famous food is sold in many street vendors and is available around the world including Japan. InsyaALLAH, regular and common Churros in Japan do not use any Haram material. After drained, usually it's sprinkled with sugar or cinnamon. To be honest, this is my favorite snack in every festival.

2. Kakigori/Shaved ice dessert
his summer favorite is so lovely! I like its taste and of course the color of the syrup. So far, (In 3 years) living in Japan, I never found haram Kakigori syrup. (But please make sure to check before you buy, ok?)
3. Candy Apple
This beautiful colored apple will catch your eyes. Don't worry, insyaALLAH, no haram ingredients are used in Candy Apple. It's just an apple that covered with red colored sugar water.
4. Halal Food Stand.
In some festival, there is usually at least one stall that sells Halal foods in Japan (May vary in each region). They are usually from Malaysia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, Turkey, etc. For example, in Tohoku Asian Festival, there are 2 food stands that sell Halal foods: curry puff from Malaysia and Opor from Indonesia. Love this food stands so much!
So, don't worry and keep it Halal.
That said, it's better to bring our own Halal Bento.

1. WAKU WAKU OCEAN FOOD COURT
Located in the first floor of Aquarium with a nice and lovely design, it is a family friendly environment. There, we found the chef of the food court and interviewed him to make sure if the foods are safe to consume for Muslims, and Alhamdullilah, with gentle smile he answered every question and kindly showed us the allergen list in every food and possibility of the foods mixed with haram materials. Here are the results:
- “Children Curry Rice” is safe to consume for Muslims but the” Adult Curry Rice” contains beef. So when you order a curry rice, please order curry rice for children
- ALL ICE CREAMS ARE HALAL: no gelatin nor alcohol.
- ALL SHAKES ARE HALAL
- “Small Parfaits” is Halal but “Big Size Parfait” is not.
- Seafood Donburi is Halal (Please see the picture below), but please use your own Soy Sauce.
- French Fries are Halal.
2. CABANA FOOD STALL
- Shark Nugget is Halal, insyaALLAH
- ALL Kaki Gori or Shaved ice are Halal
