Imoni Recipe

<Imoni Recipe>
Hi everybody! Today, I’m going to go over how to make Imoni, a popular autumn food in Tohoku region.
Imoni, as the name suggests, is simmered potato in a pot. And what’s interesting about Imoni is that not only is it the name of a dish but it is also the name of an activity that people get together and cultivate friendship while eating the dish.
There are two major styles of Imoni: Sendai Style and Yamagata Style. Sendai Style is miso flavor and uses pork; Yamagata Style is soy sauce flavor and uses beef. Sendai Style contains pork, so it’s Haram. But, no worries. With a little modification you can make Halal Imoni easily. Here's the recipe of Halal Imoni we ate the other day:
Ingredients:
・Taro roots
・Halal Chicken (substitute for beef)
・Green onions
・Burdock roots
・Carrots
・Radishes
・Shimeji mushrooms
★Soy sauce (without alcohol) or Miso
★Sugar
Directions:
1. Cut vegetables and chicken in bite size pieces.
2. Prepare a portable gas stove and boil water.
3. Simmer the vegetables and chickens in boiled water.
4. Adjust taste with say sauce and salt
If you plan on doing Imoni in Sendai, you can purchase Halal Chicken at Majumder in Aoba-ku and fresh vegetables at Sendai Morning Market. It’s said that Imoni season is over when it snows, so let’s give it a try this year before it gets much colder.
Feel free to message us if you have any questions.
